La storia dell'arte classica letta nella prospettiva lunga della vicenda dell'arte occidentale.
The history of classical art is treated not as a merely archaeological question, but examined in conjunction with the evolution of classical myth itself, from the Renaissance through to the twentieth century: while through the myth of the classics many concepts have been established, it has been thanks to recent culture that the Greek and Roman world regained a historical identity. At the same time this treatment throws light on the fundamental concepts that have, over the ages, endowed the artwork with a raison d’etre and a scope – both practical and conceptual – that is continuously changing. The stratification of different artistic experiences, from the Neolithic age to the first centuries of our times, both in its schisms and continuities, is read through the broad perspective of western art, where classical art forms the foundations and its heritage has had a determinant influence since the dawn of Christian art.
