The complete documentation of 837 works by Giulio Paolini, from 1960 to 1999.
This Catalogue Raisonné documents Giulio Paolini’s oeuvre from 1960 to 1999, with the exclusion of works on paper, prints, multiples and theatre sets.
Starting with Disegno geometrico [Geometric Drawing], which the artist sees as his true “first work”, the Catalogue lists 837 pieces for which it was possible to reconstruct an “identikit” and compile an “ID card”. For various publishing reasons late 1999 was chosen as a ceiling, so subsequent works have been excluded.
The main part deals with basic details of the works – technical data, current location and provenance – accompanied by an image and a commentary complete with statements by the artist.
The exhibition history and bibliography of the works follow in an appendix to this central section.
The Catalogue opens with some reflections by the artist and a brief essay by the author, Maddalena Disch. The second volume closes with a previously unpublished biography which looks back over Giulio Paolini’s training and career. This is followed by a complete list of exhibitions and an analytical bibliography.
The project, begun in 2000 on the initiative of Ida Gianelli, was made possible by the support of the Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art. Drawn up in close collaboration with the artist, the Catalogue Raisonné is the first book published by the Giulio and Anna Paolini Foundation.
