The volume is a tribute to Art Nouveau, the original artistic movement of the late 19th-early 20th century which combines fine materials, exquisite workmanship and extraordinary fantasy.
The movement is fully documented and illustated through the outstanding examples belonging to the richest and most important private collection devoted to Art Nouveau, famous worldwide for the variety and quality of its pieces: the Belgian collection Gillion Crowet.
Patiently gathered by Anne-Marie Gillion Crowet - daughter of Pierre E. Crowet, one of the discoverers of Surrealism, friend of Magritte, keen on contemporary art, patron and collectionist - the collection (mostly focused on the two major schools of Nancy and Bruxelles) is composed by nearly 280 pieces by some of the major masters of Art Nouveau, such as Gallé, Majorelle, Decorchemont, Lalique, Cross, Mucha, Lötz, Val-Saint-Lambert, Khnopff, Mucha and Wolfers. Among the outstanding pieces in the collection: the 1907 pâte-de-verre vase by Decorchemont, six 1900-1904 vases by Gallé (including the famous sea horse vessel) and the ceramic fireplace by Muller.
The volume not only traces the history of the collection through its often amazing acquisitions, but also offers the opportunity to admire the fascinating world of Art Nouveau together with the Symbolist universe represented by some extraordinary paintings executed by Mellery, Khnopff, Delville, Schwabe and Mossa.
