Features the work of the Spanish engineer-architect Santiago Calatrava, a world-famous figure known for his contribution over the last decade to a significant revision of the language applied to the technology and art of building. The bridges, large roofs, buildings and public spaces designed and executed under his direction in the last few years have imposed not merely an innovative, complex point of view, but also one that challenged contemporary architectural culture. The book features an important selection of over seventy recent works executed and designed all over the world, including works in progress or recently completed.
Beginning with the first works that brought Calatrava to the attention of international critics (from the Ernsting plant to the Wohlen high-school and the Stadelhofen railway station in Zurich), the book deals with the early, challenging works, and leads up to the vast territorial infrastructures (including the TGV station in Lyons and the design for the new TGV station in Liege, the designs for the Bilbao and Madrid airports and the plans for the stadiums in Marseilles, Stockholm and Berlin); special attention is given to the works that share motion as a common denominator constituting one of the most original aspects of the Spanish architect’s work.
The final chapter is devoted to bridges, the core and permanent fixture in Calatrava’s designing activity.
