This pocket book is part of the Skira Mini ARTbooks: it is perfect for casual reading or easy reference: a fun and practical art history lesson that everyone can enjoy.
Francis Bacon was born in Ireland of English parents in 1909 and died in 1992. Self-taught, he expressed the satirical, horrifying, and hallucinatory in such works as Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion (1944, Tate Gallery, London). His artwork is known for its bold, austere, and often grotesque or nightmarish imagery.
• Skira Mini ARTbooks is a pocket-sized series, conveniently priced, very practical and with lots of images, dedicated to single international artists, artistic movements and painting genres.
• Each volume contains 96 pages and at least 50 colour images and is perfect for casual reading or easy reference: an accessible overview which is a fun and a practical art history lesson that everyone can enjoy.
• The text includes a brief essay presented in an eye-catching format and technical information varying from a chronological table to a selected bibliography and artist biography, depending on the volume (for example, in the case of a movement, there is an appendix with a small biography of the prominent artists connected to that movement).
Art historian Francesca Marini has published several books for Skira. She is also the author of dossiers in the exhibition catalogues Modigliani (2006) and Bacon (2008).
