Immagini del costruire

60 years of great building projects in Italy seen through the splendid photographs of Gabriele Basilico, Gianni Berengo Gardin, Luca Campigotto, Donato Di Bello, Ramak Fazel, Mimmo Jodice, Armin Linke e Angela Rosati.

Published for the seventieth anniversary of the birth of ANCE, the National Association of building Constructors, this volume proposes a photography journey on the discovery of the great building projects undertaken in Italy from the end of the Second World War through to today. Projects include the Tuscolano quarter in Rome, the Ina Casa quarter in Genoa, the restoration and restructuring of Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the cable-stayed bridge over the river Po in Piacenza, The “City of music” Auditorium in Rome, the expansion of the Bocconi University in Milan, the Mose tidal barrier in Venice and the Zen quarter in Palermo: images testifying to the extraordinary ability of a project to set and represent not only the aspirations, culture and demands of the future of a society but also the effort, intellect, talent, inventiveness, consciousness and work of all those involved in its realisation.

Alongside the images created by eight great photographers there are three testimonies: one from senator Giulio Andreotti explaining the part played by policies in the post-war period in re-launching construction and laying the foundation for the country’s economic recovery, another from Carlo Olmo considering the ever pertinent issue of the relationship between construction and progress, also in an urban context. Finally Fulvio Irace discusses the complex relationship between building enterprises, commissioning bodies and the architectural project which leads to the finished product.

The volume is available at the bookstore in via Torino 61, Milan and from Mar 22 2006 in all Italian bookshops.
