Florence. The Twentieth Century
Florence. The Twentieth Century

description
Hopelessly devoted to its glorious Renaissance tradition, crushed by its attachment to the past, and distrustful of any innovation introduced after the fifteenth century, Florence has scarcely known and acknowledged the value of the – often brilliant – artists that lived in its territory throughout the twentieth century.

On the occasion of the arrangement of the twentieth-century art collections owned by the City of Florence in view of the creation of the Museo Novecento, Valentina Gensini gathered a rich group of experts to retrace the stories connected with Florentine artistic life after a careful study of public and private archives.
The special attention paid to the various disciplines concerned, whose stories are often interconnected with one another, brought about a broad picture of twentieth-century cultural life in Florence, at times recalling episodes little known even to experts.
The outcome is a passionate portrait of the city through a multidisciplinary approach touching on visual arts, dance, architecture, theatre, photography, cinema, and music, ultimately revealing the experiences that renewed the artistic language of Florence and contributed to the birth of a lively climate of artistic experimentation that was highly appreciated on the international scale.
