La Triennale of Milan

text by Massimo Martignoni

La Triennale of Milan is the first institution in Europe founded with the precise objective of exhibiting the applied arts, architecture and urban structures, and in a short space of time it became an absolute point of reference, both in Italy and abroad. The building housing it was designed in 1933 by a Milanese architect, Giovanni Muzio: it has been a place for experimenting the most innovative and modern ideas of each generation of designers and artists of the twentieth century. From the 1930s to the mid-1970s, each edition of the Triennale has filled the building and the Parco Sempione with ground-breaking layouts and new temporary pavilions, becoming a major appointment for international modern culture. Subsequently, the building was refurbished and laid out along new lines: at the turn of the new century, the major restoration project by Michele De Lucchi has “rediscovered” Muzio and, at the same time, has conferred a new identity on the entire Triennale complex.
This book guides the reader through the complex history of the Triennale and enables him to discover the spaces and experiences characterizing the new and vital season of exhibitions, events and research.
