Maurizio Gabbana

Con la luce negli occhi

description
Maurizio Gabbana moves fast, going from one project to another without stopping to think: he goes fast the way people in Milan do, and he embodies the essence of the Milanese person, in spite of the fact that he is originally from the Marca Trevigiana area.

In his way of working there is no study, no reflection, but rather instinct at its purest state, plus something else that we might identify as inspiration and that he, from the point of view of a very religious person, turns into a concept that is less vague. Gabbana’s photographs are an eternal ecstatic present, a celebration of photography as pure instinct, not motivated by anything if not by the pleasure of looking, of being awe-struck thanks to a somersault that makes you see the world upside down.
Maurizio Gabbana was born in Milan in 1956.
Self-taught, he was drawn to the analog camera when he was still a child. His visual references are prevalently pictorial. He has always been a devotee of the Old Masters, and has closely studied the techniques that artists like Caravaggio and Rembrandt used to represent light. This is clearly visible in the way he portrays skies.
He crosses the cities and the places where he finds himself trying to experience everyday life intensively, seeking the profound essence there akin to a silent guest as he listens. He prefers architecture but he also enjoys dealing with nature and natural phenomena.
He rarely goes to see other photographers’ exhibitions, perhaps because he fears they could influence him. His photographic research is envisioned in his pictures of artistic expression, and in the darkroom he experiments with his visions, bringing them to life.
