From the Unification of Italy to the early years of the new millennium, the history of costume jewellery interweaves styles and techniques, tradition and innovation, revealing a world of experimentation and sophisticated fun. So many things come together in costume jewellery, such as fashion, art, design, craftsmanship and social history, expressing society’s tastes through its many cultural expressions. Speaking of Italian costume jewellery means recounting the history of a nation’s customs and habits, and its constant striving to shape a creative code under the aegis of beauty.
Bianca Cappello, historian and jewellery critic, is a professor who coordinates and curates lessons and seminars in the History of Jewellery and Costume Jewellery; in addition to this, she writes for various publications on her specialties. She curates jewellery and costume jewellery exhibitions for museums and public bodies, and is the curatorial consultant for museum collections. She lives in Milan.
