description

Edited by Germano Celant, it documents the activities of the Dwan Gallery from 1959 to 1971, when its premises on the West Coast and the East Coast were home to the leading figures in Nouveau Réalisme (such as Yves Klein, Jean Tinguely, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Martial Raysse) and Minimal Art (Carl Andre, Walter De Maria, Sol LeWitt, and Charles Ross). Ample space is also devoted to the key part played by Virginia Dwan in the discovery and promotion of Earth Works or Land Art, displaying both conceptual and actual commitment through her support for the creation of Michael Heizer’s Double Negative (1969) and Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty (1970). Over the years, this major cultural and artistic contribution was accompanied by her work as a photographer, director and writer addressing international developments in the visual arts, architecture, and music.
Richly illustrated with previously unpublished material, the book provides historical insight into a rarely investigated aspect of European and American art in the 1960s.
