Sue Williamson & Lebohang Kganye: Tell Me What You Remember
March 5–May 21, 2023 On view in the Roberts Gallery
Sue Williamson & Lebohang Kganye: Tell Me What You Remember places in dialogue the work of two of South Africa’s most acclaimed artists to reflect on history, memory, and power of self-narration in the context of apartheid and its legacies. Two generations apart in age, Sue Williamson (b. 1941) and Lebohang Kganye (b. 1990) pose similar questions in their work: How do conversations between generations foster understanding, particularly in moments of crisis? How do the stories our elders tell us shape our personal, familial, and national identities? How do they shape our histories?
Williamson’s early works document the struggle against apartheid through first-person testimony; later, she recorded conversations between women with firsthand experience of enforced segregation and their children or grandchildren—the so-called “born frees.”
Kganye draws on conversations with her grandmother and aunts to trace her ancestral roots, revealing histories of displacement and highlighting storytelling and song as modes of resistance. By bringing their works together, this exhibition creates a conversation about oral history and intergenerational understanding. Featuring films, photographs, and installations, Tell Me What You Remember is the most substantial US presentation of each artist to date, and marks the first time their work has been shown together.
