Peder Balke (1804–1887) is one of the most outstandingartists of Northern European Romanticism.Balke was originally trained as a house painter.However, his talent was recognized and Balke went toOslo. An event of great importance to Balke’s artisticdevelopment was a large commission from King LouisPhilippe of France. • Balke has recently been internationally recognized asone of the true geniuses of his age. Knut Ljøgodt is presently Director of NIA (Nordic Institute of Art, Oslo) andCurator at the National Gallery, Oslo.
